During the process of thinking, our mind changes the world into symbols and is constantly choosing, combining, conversing and reorganizing these symbols, into a format that is easy for the mind to recognize and remember. The human mind then uses these semiotic symbols to cogitate and process vast quantities of information. Art works as a way to communicate, and act as a thinking process, so that the artwork itself is an expression of semiotics. This means that how icons, index and symbols are used, become the key determinants as to the quality of the art work. These icons, index and symbols are used to connect and communicate with audiences about their thought process while creating the piece. They also try to instruct and persuade purpose; and communicate to audiences through seeing (or listening, touching or feeling) the art work which they hope to convey their own semiotic experience, to project the correct understanding and message from the artist.
The best way to perceive semiotic meanings from the artist, it is important to understand the cultural background of the artwork. As in different cultural environments, the same symbol can mean totally different things. For example, in Chinese mythology, a peach is typically a symbol for living a long life. However in Western cultures a peach is used to denote parts of the anatomy with attractive cute curves for females. Another example is the Buddhist symbol ‘卍’, which in Asian countries, is a religious symbol, and it can mean lucky; but in Western countries, Nazi Germany used that symbol so is forever associated with a murderous regime. Therefore the ability to use that symbol for any artwork would not easily be accepted by audiences.
